This Spring/ Summer Senior Thesis Collection GYOPO is a quest for identity and belonging in America. My Korean American heritage and identity, is translated into my work through the use of textiles.
I aimed to address the complexity of navigating the world around as a plus-size individual myself. Growing up as a plus-size gyopo, I tried to find what being a Korean American means to me, through blends of Korean patchwork jogakbo and crumb quilting and repurposing second-hand materials. The importance of using what you have is further shown through patchwork and weaving.
This collection is not just a showcase but a celebration of plus-size forms, by employing dyeing techniques to produce vibrant colors and flattering silhouettes. Complementing my garments, my accessories further unify the collection of self-identity.
Look 4 is a dyed flared top + dyed layered tie skirt.
